Are fitness bands really worth the money?

Diwali was around the corner. All the shopping sites were screaming for attention with their "Dhamaka" sale. I was scrolling through making a wish list of what to buy.

My husband had a suggestion: Let me buy you a fitness band. He had been using one for a few months and wanted me to try it out.

Women don't really like to be told that they need to get fit, do we? *Sigh*

I went on defensively, I workout every morning in the gym, I am on a (almost) healthy diet, I hate wearing a band all the time, I don't really need to "measure" and blah, blah and more blah...

Long story short - Diwali gift was a fitness band. Actually Pre Diwali.

Now I thought why not try this thing out. Downloaded the associated App on my phone and that's it, I was ready! The App bombarded me with so many questions and a Coach got assigned and she started sending out messages on what my goals are, what I eat, how many hours do I sleep. Phew..who shares all that information!.

My best half reminded me next morning; you aren't wearing the band yet. Now I had another excuse, I was planning to wear it, but where should I wear my most priced watch. I love my watch and no way I was going to let it go.

Well..I did let it go. I set out to do 10,000 steps a day. That was my target!

It's been little more than a month and the fitness band is my most precious jewellery. I just love it, I wear it all the time.

What started just as a game, comparing mine and my best half's step count, now has become a beautiful habit. I continue to do my routine morning workout but to achieve my target step count I am walking around quite a bit through out the day.

Additionally a few days of greed to do lot more, I started going for short evening walks, fitness band on my wrist, headphones and my favourite play lists. That's the best way to spend winter evenings. I realised my play lists haven't changed in years, there is lot of warm comfort in the music you grew up with. The congratulatory vibration which the band gives at the completion of the target  is definitely one of the best vibrations;-)

I am definitely more physically active and band being one of the motivation.

I always heard this excuse from lot of my patients, mostly females on asked if they are exercising regularly, they say they are doing house hold activities and that is good enough.

"Physical activity" and "exercise" Physical activity, exercise, and physical fitness: definitions and distinctions for health-related research.  are terms that describe different concepts. However they are often confused and even used interchangeably.

Exercise is a physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and purposeful.  Physical activity includes any body movement that contracts your muscles to burn more calories than your body would normally do so just to exist at rest. Although learning to enjoy and plan structured exercise into your routine would definitely improve physical fitness.

Its definitely good to start being more physically active and then to get into a exercise routine.

Exercise is one of the main part of my treatment arsenal. My prescription for being mentally and physically fit is get going and keep moving. There is no better "mood enhancer" then an exercise.

Go ahead and gift yourselves and  your loved ones a fitness band to keep you motivated.
