A snippet of my humdrum!
I met this elderly gentleman at my opd last week, he wanted me to give fitness for his corn removal. His blood sugars and blood pressure were over the roof, cardiac disease wth ejection fraction of 30%. I said, we need to get your sugars controlled first. He started yelling at me, he said, he just wants to hang himself, he is tired of seeing doctors, he has been on fluid restriction, diet restrictions for more than 30 years.
The way, he yelled I almost lost my patience, took time off for 5 minutes and saw him again. I counselled him for next half hour, I changed his diabetic medicines, titrated insulin and added medicines for his neuropathy, postponed his procedure. I had no hope of seeing him again.
I saw him today, he looked like a changed man! Looked younger, his blood sugars are normal for the first time in years. I couldn't believe it. He said, he never felt so good in years. He said, you took so much of your time though I yelled at you and your medicines worked like magic!
I don't believe in magic but these incidents do make me realize, what immense responsibility a Doctor has, it's almost scary that, your reaction, every word you say can impact the other person.
A person who wanted to hang himself to a calm person today. The change was so dramatic! Patients teach you patience and humility.
I am proud today! Reminded me of this!
"Nothing will sustain you more potently than the power to recognize in you humdrum routine, the true poetry of life - the poetry of the commonplace, of the ordinary person, of the plain, toilworn, with their loves and their joys, their sorrows and griefs."
Sir William Osler
